Some backyards just don't work. The slope fights you, water goes where it shouldn't, and getting down to the lower yard feels like a hazard every time. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - a steep drop, poor drainage, and no real way to access the creek below without stumbling down a muddy hill.
We installed 140 feet of Versa-Lok retaining wall in storm blend. That's a serious run of block, and it needed to be done right. Versa-Lok is a segmental retaining wall system that's engineered to handle real soil pressure and hold up through freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rain, and everything else. The storm blend color gives it a clean, natural look that fits the wooded setting without looking out of place.
Right in the center of the wall, we built in a set of steps leading down toward the creek. No more awkward scramble down the slope. Just a clean, solid path that makes the lower yard actually usable. That kind of detail matters - it's not just about holding dirt back, it's about making the whole yard work better.
The regrading was just as important as the wall itself. We moved and shaped the grade so water flows away from the structure and doesn't pool anywhere it shouldn't. Once the grade was set, we seeded and strawed the entire upper yard so the new lawn ties in cleanly with the wall. It's the kind of work that protects the hardscape investment long-term.
This is a good example of what we mean when we say hardscape and construction done right. The wall looks great, but more importantly - it solves a real problem. Water moves correctly now, the yard is accessible, and everything from the land clearing phase through the final seeding was handled as one complete job.
