Old Timber Retaining Wall Replaced with Block System in Dublin OH

Here's what we were working with - a long timber retaining wall running the length of a sloped backyard, holding back a pretty significant grade change between the house and the lower yard. Timber walls like this one have a lifespan, and this one had reached its limit. The wood was rotting, splitting, and starting to lose the battle against the soil pressure behind it. It's a common situation we see a lot in Dublin.

When timber goes, it doesn't just look bad. It stops doing its job. The wall was no longer holding the grade effectively, which means erosion, shifting soil, and eventually bigger structural headaches. The homeowner needed something that would actually last - not just a patch job.

We pulled the old wall out completely and built a new block retaining wall using Pisa XL smooth block in a fieldstone blend, capped in charcoal. But the look is only part of it. The real work happens behind the wall - clean backfill and geo grid reinforcement layered into the hillside to distribute the load and lock everything in place. That's what gives a wall like this its long-term strength. Without proper drainage and geo grid, even a good-looking wall can fail.

The finished wall steps up the slope in a clean, uniform line from the lower yard all the way to the driveway level. The charcoal cap ties it together and gives it a sharp, finished edge. Straw was laid over the disturbed slope to get grass re-established and protect against erosion while things settle in. This homeowner also has a beautiful set of bluestone steps connecting the patio area to the upper yard - a nice detail that shows how hardscape elements work together across a property.
